 Before we even attempt to look into the United States relationship with North Korea, we must first understand how the conflict all began. After The Second World War, North Korea became a communist state and South Korea was occupied by the United States. The Korean War, which began in 1950, is considered to be the first phase of the Cold War, and began when North Korea invaded South Korea. While China and the Soviet Union assisted North Korea during the war, the United States and the United Nations formed partnership with South Korea. At this point, North Korea’s relationship with the United States became strained. The US provided the southern state with majority of the military power needed. Though the war ended in July 1953 when an armistice was signed, the two countries are still at loggerheads with each other and the United States role in the sequence of events has not been forgotten.
